European University of Lefke (EUL) School of Health, Department of Health Management organized a panel themed “New Technologies in Health Sciences”. The panel which was conducted with the presentations of Head of Marmara University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Health Management Prof. Dr. Mehveş Tarım and Academician of the same faculty Prof. Dr. Gonca Mumcu and Director of EUL School of Health Prof. Dr. Deniz Şelimen was moderated by Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Ruhi Selçuk Tabak.

Tarım; “E-Health applications offer citizens fair and safe services at high quality”

In her presentation titled “E-Health”, Head of Marmara University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Health Management Prof. Dr. Mehveş Tarım emphasized the need of paradigm shift in medicine in relation with the presence of the aging population nowadays and added that with the increase in chronic diseases, more expensive treatment, medical instrumentation is needed, and thus a new paradigm should emerge and that this will happen with E-Health. Pointing out that World Health Organization (WHO) describes E-Health as the usage of information and communication technologies for health, Tarım expressed that E-Health is continuing its activities to improve the flow of information through electronic means, to support the delivery of health services and systemic management. Furthermore Tarım stated that, apart from offering citizens fair and safe services at high quality, E-Health is a very important tool to fulfill obligations such as health, public health surveys, reports and humanitarian activities.

Mumcu; “Health informatics increases the patient safety”

In her presentation titled “Informatics in Health”, Academician of Marmara University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Health Management Prof. Dr. Gonca Mumcu pointed out that using health information in health services actually reduces cost, improves quality of service, enables access to reliable patient records, more effective clinical decisions, and increases patient safety. Pointing out that informatics provide many different conveniences in many different fields, Mumcu said that e-prescription usage with electronic health record, easy access and easy consultation, easy handling of many patient related processes, drug tracking systems and pharmacy information management system and monitoring the process up to end user are very important for patient safety.

Şelimen; “Telemedicine is used to make decisions about the patient’s diagnosis”

Director of EUL School of Health Prof. Dr. Deniz Şelimen who made her study on “The Practices of Telemedicine” described Telemedicine as a concept in which wireless internet, satellite technology or telephone are used in healthcare services to reach every human being from remote places. Şelimen said that, “A concept that combines the Internet and medicine, telemedicine is not only a technical development, but also a local, regional and world-wide integration network. As a result; hospitals can receive imaging services from different centers, as well as expert opinion via remote satellite methods”.

Şelimen also pointed out that telemedicine applications have been used since 2003 in the world, 2003 in Europe in a variety of different forms in the field of radiology, usually in consultation, ie, remote patient sharing and decision making about the diagnosis of the patient. Şelimen added that, in Turkey telemedicine applications have been used since 2008 and it was first established in a state hospital in the field of radiology.
