Mental Health Support Services
‘Education, Training and Exam Practices Directive for Disabled Students’ is developed by the European University of Lefke on the ground of various national and international regulations. This document is the main directive and implementation related to the disabled students (Appendix X).
In the light of this objective, this directive defines ‘The code of practices’, ‘Course exemptions’, ‘Examination applications’ and ‘Deviation and final provision’. These articles are the main body which have to be followed by the lecturers and students.
Besides, the University has a Student Development and Counselling Centre to provide support service for mental health conditions. The Student Development and Counselling Centre is provided with an expert consultant/ Psych dramatist and a consultant. The Centre is for the students with special needs, students in need of help, in need of advice and encouragement. The Centre aims to assist students to cope with any problems that they are experiencing and struggling in the light of the principle of confidentiality, neutrality, respect for peoples’ rights and volunteering.
Both individual counselling service and group counselling service are offered by the Centre. Individual counselling service provides private conversation while group counselling service aims to bring students with similar difficulties together and achieve further support among the group members. Besides, psychodrama groups that ‘helps individuals to reconsider the problems that they are experiencing, to stimulate the problem they are experiencing and to question this problem and to find the basic source of the problem’ are conducted.

Sign Language Interpretation Services
A hearing impaired student must submit a report of a comprehensive evaluation performed within the last three years by a licenced otolaryngologist. If not available, the student must apply for an examination in the EUL Health Centre to indicate that the applicant meets the criteria for a hearing disability. After this procedure, instructors/lecturers and invigilators will be informed about the students’ disability condition as well as student identification (Article 5(h)).
Seating arrangements in classrooms that have hearing impaired students are organised to enable these students to visualise and hear the lecturer (See Article 5).
According to Article 5(f), hearing impaired students are provided support during and after the lectures by their lecturers and pioneering senior students (4th year student, Postgraduate students and PhD Students). Senior students who have advanced skills in note-taking are assigned to assist the hearing impaired students. This procedure provides help during the lecture, for the lecture notes for the further studies, in the assignments, quizzes and examinations.
In addition, lecturers share the lecture notes before and/or after each lecture. All lecture notes are available on the Moodle and accessible by all the students.
Learning Support Services
To document a learning disability a student must submit a report of a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation performed within the last three years by a licenced psychologist or certified university consultant. If not available, the student must apply for an examination in the EUL Health Centre to indicate that the applicant meets the criteria for a specific learning disability. After this procedure, instructors/lecturers and invigilators will be informed about the students’ disability condition as well as student identification (Article 5(h)).
In this regard, the related faculty provides advisory service to its students to support and assist them to achieve success in the programme. Student advisory service that starts with the enrolment continues till the end of the student’s graduation. Advisors assign office hours and students can visit their advisors face-to-face in their offices.
In addition, office hours are assigned by all teaching staff and are announced on the syllabi. Students can meet their course instructors and any teaching staff and receive help during the office hours. In the case of any urgency or any unexpected situation students are able to contact to their advisors and teaching staff other than the office hours. All lecturers, including the administrators, are available to meet students in their offices or receive their e-mails, messages.
Also the university advances Children with Special Needs Practice, Research and Education Centre which is in service of students with learning disabilities. The Centre provides services such as Individual and Group Training, Educational / Developmental Assessment, Family Consultancy, and Professional Development.
For the examinations, Article 7 Examination Application is followed by the lecturers.
