Joint event of EUL Faculty of Architecture and INTBAU Cyprus was held
14th century Gothic religious buildings discussed
The first presentation of the joint event of the European University of Lefke (EUL) Faculty of Architecture and the International Union of Traditional Building, Architecture and Urbanization, INTABU – Cyprus, “INTBAU Cyprus-EUL Cultural Heritage Seminar Series” was held online between 14:00 and 15:00 on Monday, December 28, 2020. The seminar was held by Civil Engineer Cem Taneri, an expert in restoration, and hosted by EUL, via Microsoft Teams.
Following the opening speech of EUL Faculty of Architecture Dean Prof. Dr. Lerzan Aras, Cem Taneri’s presentation titled “14th Century Gothic Religious Structures in Northern Cyprus: Measures and structural interventions against earthquakes throughout history” was completed with the intense participation of students. In the presentation, measures and reinforcements taken against the earthquake were explained in 7 Gothic religious buildings selected from monasteries, cathedrals and churches to ensure that the structures survived until today. Earthquakes that have occurred throughout the history in Cyprus, the damages caused by earthquakes and the research methods carried out to obtain these data were among the prominent topics. In addition to historical research used in data determination, attention was drawn to the application of non-destructive diagnosis method to obtain more effective data. Taneri explained the ground penetrating radar (YNR) and infrared thermography methods he used in his research on selected structures.
At the end of the event, the event organization committee faculty members Asst. Prof. Dr. Makbule Oktay and Asst. Prof. Dr. Nilay Bilsel and Prof. Dr. Lerzan Aras thanked Cem Taneri due to his participation in and the valuable information he conveyed, and to INTBAU-Cyprus director Prof. Dr. Özgür Dinçyürek for his cooperation and support. The second presentation of the event will be held on January 4, 2021, between 14:00 and 15:00, online via Microsoft Teams, with the presentation of Master Architect Protection Expert Özge Özbekoğlu.
