Information on Elderly Neglect and Abuse was conveyed at EUL
European University of Lefke (EUL) Office of Students’ Dean and Social Services Club organized an event themed “Information on Elderly Neglect and Abuse” under the framework of Social Services with the Society lecture. Project held at the Faculty of Health Sciences was conducted by Academician of Social Services Department Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özge Özgür Bayır.
Bayır: Aging is an inevitable and irreversible process
Giving information about the project, Bayır said that the awareness project organized by the 4th grade students of the Social Services Departments with the aim of attracting attention to neglect and abuse which are the biggest problems of the growing elderly population with the prolongation of human life, draw intense interest and added that the students managed to draw attention to stands with canes, beards and paints that they prepared. Bayır said that “Aging is an inevitable and irreversible process” and added that geriatric studies have gained more importance nowadays because of the increase in the elderly population along with the prolongation of human life.

Pointing out that as a result of the increase in the elderly population, the care of the elderly and the studies in this area gained importance, Bayır said that “The cases of abuse and neglect of the elderly who are exposed to neglect and abuse within the institutions and within their families should be reported”. Bayır stated that the project attracted a great deal of attention by the participants who wanted to stop the neglect and abuse of the elderly and added that “The inability to help the elderly with bodily cleaning or dressing is a case of neglect”.
Bayır said that “The inability to provide physical and mental health needs of the elderly is a case of neglect (This does not include cases in which the elderly refuses treatment.)” and added that the inadequacy of protecting the elderly from health and safety damages is a case of neglect. Bayır also said that all painful, bodily practices by someone who is caring for the elderly person or in a position trusted by the elderly are considered as physical abuse.
