Mehmet Ekin Vaiz: “The key is sincerity…”

The European University of Lefke (EUL) Faculty of Communication Sciences hosted Gülşen Erçin Vaiz and Mehmet Ekin Vaiz from the team of Neydi Olacağı as part of the “Communication Days” event series. At the event on “Communication and Humor,” the preacher couple talked about the developmental adventure of Neydi Olacağı, and touched on various aspects of humor.

Mehmet Ekin Vaiz, who mentioned the use of social media applications in Cyprus by comparing traditional and digital media in his speech, stated that the use of social media by 94% of a country’s population means that any content placed on that medium is accessible to the whole country. Addressing the importance of content in social media, the Vaiz said on the subject: “The audience is already in social media… This means that there is constant and uninterrupted connection. The only remaining problem is content… With the understanding that content is king, if there is good content, you can also shoot it over the phone”.

Emphasizing the importance of being up-to-date in the social media, Mehmet Ekin Vaiz emphasized that the age is consumption-centered and said, “In the age of very fast consumption, people want to laugh again in humor and comedy. This is the biggest grievance of comedians. However, the main thing is sincerity. If you break away from the essence of the story and the humor and get more followers, you will lose your sincerity, the essence and nuance of the matter will be lost. This is the risky part of the business,” he said.

In her speech, Gülşen Vaiz stated that ” Neydi Olacağı “, which started with political humor in 2015, shifted to viral advertising in 2016, adding that at first they did not know that what they were doing was viral marketing and viral advertising, but after they entered the field, they realized that it was actually viral advertising. Stating that humor is the most important element of the videos and contents they produce, Gülşen Vaiz emphasized that these contents and the resulting characters are a reflection of life and Cypriot culture.

“Both in Omorfo, where I live, and in Göçmenköy, where Ekin lives, relationships and lives are very much intertwined. Neighborhood relations are very cordial. Everyone’s life is in a situation like everyone’s life. This data revealed the characters of Neriman and Sonay, the curious neighbor, the gossipy neighbor,” said Gülşen Erçin, adding that the most important feature of the preacher’s videos is that they reflect the characters in life. Gülşen Vaiz continued her words as follows: The most important feature of our videos is that they reflect the characters in our lives. The source of our content is based on our own personal life and observations, that is, our content is not disconnected from our lives, not disconnected from our lives”.

Nazife Kıral, one of the young actresses of the Neydi Olacağı team, who is one of the students of EUL Pre-school Teaching Department, also participated in the event, and shared about the process of being included in the team. The “Communication and Humor” themed event organized by the Faculty of Communication Sciences of the European University of Lefke as part of the “Communication Days” event series, ended with the answering of intense questions from the audience and the presentation of a double participation certificate by the speaker.
