EUL Students Organize Creative Workshop for Kurtuluş Primary School

As part of a collaboration between the Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Education at the European University of Lefke (EUL) and Kurtuluş Primary School, a hands-on workshop titled “Mathematics with Marshmallows: A Tasty Journey into the World of Fractals” was held. During the event, students explored the fascinating world of mathematics by creating Sierpinski triangles using colorful marshmallows and toothpicks.
The workshop was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nurdan Özreçberoğlu Kırıkkaleli, Head of the Primary Mathematics Education Department, together with first- and second-year student teachers. The interactive activity was carried out in an engaging and enjoyable atmosphere with the participation of 4th-grade students from Kurtuluş Primary School.
Throughout the workshop, the students constructed Sierpinski triangle pyramids using marshmallows and toothpicks. Through this concrete modeling activity, they were introduced to the concept of fractals, learning that these are repeating geometric patterns commonly found in nature. The session visualized the link between mathematical thinking and real-life experiences.
By conducting this workshop, EUL’s future teachers strengthened both their subject knowledge and instructional skills, while also contributing positively to the attitudes of young students toward mathematics.
