EUL Faculty Member Asst. Prof. Dr Musa Muhtaroğlu: World ALS Day provides an important platform for global awareness and solidarity
European University of Lefke (EUL) Faculty of Medicine Faculty Member Asst. Prof. Dr. Musa Muhtaroğlu made statements on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) disease within the scope of World ALS Day. Muhtaroğlu stated that ALS Day provides an important platform for global awareness and solidarity in order to raise awareness and support individuals living with ALS and their families.
Muhtaroğlu continued as follows; Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects motor neurons. Motor neurons control movement by sending signals from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles. ALS is characterised by the gradual degeneration and death of these nerve cells. The result is muscle weakness and loss of control. Over time, ALS patients may experience difficulties with vital functions such as swallowing, speaking and breathing.
Symptoms of ALS usually begin with muscle weakness and can manifest in any part of the body. Common symptoms include;
- Weakness in the hands and legs
- Speech and swallowing difficulties
- Muscle cramps and twitching
- Loss of fine motor skills
These symptoms progress over time and the disease makes it difficult for the person to carry out activities of daily living. Unfortunately, there is no definitive cure for ALS, but there are various treatment and support methods to manage symptoms.
Muhtaroğlu stated that World ALS Day aims to ensure that the community learns more about ALS and recognises the early signs of the disease. “Early diagnosis can make a big difference in slowing the progression of the disease and improving quality of life. Therefore, raising awareness and providing information about ALS is of vital importance. Many researches are being conducted worldwide to understand the causes of ALS and to develop treatment. Studies examining the effects of genetic and environmental factors on the disease are showing promising results. Research plays an important role in developing new approaches and drugs for the treatment and management of ALS.”
Muhtaroğlu concluded, “Let’s take action together to learn more about ALS, support patients and encourage research. Let’s not forget that it is possible to defeat ALS with awareness and support.”
