EUL Academician Güler was awarded at the 38th ANKEM Rational Antibiotic Use Congress
European University of Lefke (EUL), Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics Academician Asst. Prof. Dr. Emrah Güler participated in the ’38th ANKEM Rational Use of Antibiotics Congress’ held at Acapulco Congress Centre with a total of 3 papers, 1 oral and 2 poster presentations, and presented his studies.
In the congress, the study titled ‘In vitro Anti-Trichomonas vaginalis activity of Origanum majorana Essential Oil and Synergy with Metronidazole’, which was presented as an oral presentation, was awarded the Oral Presentation Third Prize. The multicentre study was conducted in collaboration with European University of Lefke, Near East University, Manisa Celal Bayar University and Balıkesir University.
In this orally presented study, an essential oil extracted from Origanum majorana (Cypriot marjoram, sweet marjoram) tenuifolium (marjoram, broomrape, chap. Tenuifolium (Cypriot marjoram, sweet marjoram) (marjoram, broomrape, broomweed, hatchika), the effectiveness of the essential oil obtained from Origanum majorana (Cypriot marjoram, sweet marjoram) on Trichomonas vaginalis, a sexually transmitted parasite, was investigated, Güler stated, “In addition, the synergistic effect of the essential oil with the drug metronidazole, which is widely used in the treatment of trichomoniasis infection caused by the parasite, was also examined. In the light of the results obtained, it was found that the essential oil was effective on the parasite and the effectiveness increased with metronidazole.”
The titles of the other two studies presented as poster presentations were ‘Tuberculosis Prevalence in Northern Cyprus between 2016-2022 and the Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Tuberculosis Infection’ and ‘Molecular Characterisation of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis and Canine Leishmaniasis Isolates in Northern Cyprus: A Pilot Study’.
