Educational Program on “Occupational Health and Safety” offered to EUL Students
European University of Lefke (EUL) Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Nutrition and Dietetics organized an educational program themed “OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety”. Nissert International Certification and Inspection Services Ltd. Training Specialist Fulya Doğan attended the program as a speaker.
After the training which was held with intense participation students received “Occupatinal Health and Safety” certificate
At the end of the program students of Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Nutrition and Dietetics and Vocational School of Health Sciences received a “Occupatinal Health and Safety” certificate.
Doğan stated the aim of “OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety” themed educational program as to create and maintain a healthy, safe working environment by eliminating or minimizing such risks in the organization in light of the legislation on occupational health and safety.
Doğan said that “OHSAS 18001 is an international standard that complies with the quality and environmental standards as well as the requirements for occupational health and safety. For this reason, OHSAS 18001 can be easily integrated into other management systems. OHSAS 18001 demonstrates that organizations are in compliance with the applicable legislation on occupational health and safety, while increasing productivity and productivity at the workplace thanks to the continuous improvement of the business environment”. She further stated that OHSAS 18001 is a standard aimed at the health and safety of employees rather than the safety of organizations’ products and services.
In the education, Doğan listed the aims of OHSAS in three main topics as follows:
1) Protecting Employees: It is the first aim of occupational health and safety to protect the employees from the negative effects of the workplace and to ensure that they work in a comfortable and safe environment.
2) Ensuring the Production Safety: It is one of the aims of occupational health and safety to protect the production (product and / or service) by minimizing the labor force and working day losses which may occur due to occupational accidents and occupational diseases and thus increasing the work efficiency.
3) Ensuring the Operational Safety: With the measures taken in the working environment, fire, explosion, machine failures and the elimination of the failures that might endanger the operation will ensure operational safety.
Doğan finally said that “The OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System Standard may be adopted by any organization wishing to implement a formal procedure to reduce, eliminate, or minimize health and safety risks for employees, customers and the public. It is also a general standard and can meet the needs of any size and sector organization” and explained the current practices and methods of occupational health and safety in recent years.
