“Down Syndrome Awareness Symposium” was organised at EUL
Down Syndrome was discussed with a multidisciplinary approach during the symposium
European University of Lefke (EUL) Faculty of Medicine organised a Down Syndrome Awareness Symposium. Prof. Dr. Rümeysa Demirdamar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, made the opening speech of the Down Syndrome Awareness Symposium. After the opening speech, the students of the Faculty of Medicine took the stage and stated that Down Syndrome is not a disease that needs to be treated, but a genetic difference.
Faculty of Medicine faculty member Prof. Dr. Rasime Kalkan provided information about the genetic characteristics of Down Syndrome and the diagnostic tests that can be used in the prenatal and postnatal periods. Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Ataman, faculty member of the Faculty of Education, emphasised the points to be considered in Down Syndrome education. Faculty of Education faculty member Asst. Prof. Dr. Çağda Kıvanç Çağanağa explained the education policies implemented in the world and in our country during her speech. Faculty of Health Sciences lecturer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Macide Artaç Özdal explained what the health management of Down Syndrome involves. Faculty of Arts and Sciences lecturer Beliz Köroğlu also gave information about the psychological approach to individuals with Down Syndrome.
At the end of the symposium, all the speakers emphasised that individuals with Down Syndrome can successfully live their lives with a well-programmed education and proper health management at the right time.
