“Civil Day” event held at EUL
European University of Lefke (EUL) Civil Engineering Club organized a “Civil Day” event. The event was conducted with the participation of Prof. Dr. Kutay Özaydın, one of the most important scientists in the field of Geotechnical Engineering in Turkey, Gürkan Yağcıoğlu, Head of Chamber of Turkish Cypriot Civil Engineers (KTİMO) and Bora Kutruza, General Secretary of Chamber of Turkish Cypriot Civil Engineers and students and academicians of EUL.
Emphasizing the importance of Civil Engineering in the society, Gürkan Yağcıoğlu, Head of Chamber of Turkish Cypriot Civil Engineers said that he has a full belief that the students of the EUL will have a successful career due to the fully equipped education they receive and shared his experiences with the students. In his presentation, Bora Kutruza, General Secretary of Chamber of Turkish Cypriot Civil Engineers gave detailed information on the harbor project that he is working as a Civil Engineer in Shanghai, China.
Prof. Dr. Kutay Özaydın gave a presentation about the rehabilitation of Haliç and the constructions of New İstanbul Airport and talked about the project where toxic wastes accumulated in the region are pumped to a nearby quarry basin and transferred to Haliç again after settling with the established system in order to eliminate the pollution in the Haliç Area of the Bosphorus. Özaydın also gave information about Istanbul New Airport project related to the amount of excavation and filling and conveyed detailed information about field works conducted in Geotechnical Engineering.
“Platform Design Competition” was held
The event proceed after the presentations and the tests of “Platform Design Competition” was held in the afternoon. Within the framework of the competition rules, students were asked to produce platforms using only balsa wood and glue, weighing 25 grams and 40 cm high. Then, 3, 6 and 10 kg weights were loaded on these platforms and success test under weight was performed. The project which lifted 14.6 gr won the first place, 16.4 gr the second place and 19.5 gr the third place. The students who prepared projects that successfully lifted 10 kilos were awarded with certificates.
