EUL students experienced the responsibility of active first aid intervention
European University of Lefke (EUL) Vocational School of Health Services, Department of First and Emergency Aid Lecturer Asst. Prof. Dr. Semra Aslay drew attention to the importance of first aid and talked about the practices carried out by EUL students.
Aslay stated that first aid is the applications made with the facilities around the person without using any special medical devices in cases requiring emergency intervention, and stated that the most important topics in these applications are to eliminate life-threatening things, to help in accordance with international guidelines, to activate the emergency response system as soon as possible and to define what the situation requiring first aid is. Aslay, however, emphasised that no matter how well the person has received first aid training, repeated trainings are necessary as the effect of knowledge and experience will weaken over time.
It is recommended to know the current practices in first aid and to repeat them as a practice
Aslay continued her words as follows; As of 2024, assuming that the majority of the world population knows and applies basic first aid rules, the first aid agenda has been determined as “First aid in the digital world”. In this context, it is recommended to know the current practices and repeat them as practice. For this purpose, second-year students of the Department of First Aid and Emergency Aid at the Vocational School of Health Services organised a series of first aid days spread over the spring semester.
At the event themed “First Aid Days on Campus” Aslay provided both theoretical and practical training to the students of the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Education, Vocational School of Health Services, Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics on the most common situations (heart massage, foreign body obstruction, pulse control, blood pressure measurement, sprains, first aid to the patient with seizures) and situations requiring first aid. Aslay also stated that in this event, which was held in 5 different sessions, the participants experienced the responsibility of intervening as active first aiders on scenarios that are one-to-one with the real ones on the models in the first and emergency aid laboratory.
