European University of Lefke (EUL) Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Education organised a panel on Being a Child in Türkiye and Northern Cyprus in the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye and the 40th anniversary of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Department of Preschool Teaching, which organises various activities every year within the scope of 20 November World Children’s Rights Day, this year, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye and the 40th anniversary of the TRNC, the World Children’s Rights Day was discussed in the context of ‘Republic’.
The event was moderated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Uluğ İlve Yücesoy from European University of Lefke and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nihan Koran from Eastern Mediterranean University and moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azize Ummanel. Making an introductory speech in the context of Children’s Rights, Ummanel gave information about childhood policies in the early republican period in Türkiye and then gave the floor to the guests. Summarising the studies on children’s rights in the first 100 years of the Republic of Türkiye, Asst. Prof. Dr. Uluğ İlve Yücesoy discussed the legal dimension of these studies and stated that the Republic of Türkiye has always given great importance and support to international agreements on children’s rights.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nihan Koran, emphasised children’s rights, and especially the child’s right to participate in the first 40 years of the TRNC, and drew attention to the studies on the subject. The speakers stated that studies on children’s rights only make sense when they are put into practice and underlined that everyone should be a rights defender.
