EUL Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies participated in the event on the use of treated sewage sludge in Agriculture
03The event on the use of treated sedimentary waste (treated sewage sludge) and recycled water in agriculture, organised by the European Union-funded Technical Assistance for the Implementation of Agricultural Advisory Services (TDH) Project with the support of Güzelyurt Municipality, was held in Güzelyurt. On the first day of the event, EUL Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies Lecturer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Kahramanoğlu made a detailed presentation on the importance of soil in agriculture, the main causes of soil degradation, what should be done to prevent soil degradation, the importance of organic matter in improving soil fertility, plant nutrition, and especially fertilisation in citrus fruits.
Afterwards, Faculty Member Asst. Prof. Dr. Serhat Usanmaz made a presentation on the importance of water, the main reasons for the decrease in the quality and quantity of water resources, and effective water use techniques, and then mentioned the irrigation needs of citrus orchards.
EUL students have learned how to recycle waste with the right moves and turn it into a sustainable practice
In the last presentation, Donald Aquilina, TDH Technical Assistance Project team leader, mentioned the services of the technical assistance project and how they can be used by the producers. In the afternoon, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Kahramanoğlu, Donald Aquilina and Dr. Carlo Ponzio explained the general working principles of treatment systems and gave information about the physical and chemical properties of treated sludge and recycled water, EU regulations, and local regulations in this field. During these trainings, important issues that producers and agricultural engineers (or consultants) should know about the legal procedures to be followed in the application of treated sludge and its safe use were detailed one by one. On the second day of the event, after the participants visited Güzelyurt Waste Treatment Plant, faculty members Asst. Prof. Dr. Serhat Usanmaz and Assoc. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Kahramanoğlu explained the practical application of treated sludge to the participants. Students and other participants of the event were informed about how to recycle waste, which is one of the most important environmental problems of the future, with the right moves and make it a sustainable application.
