Adolescents’ addiction to social media was investigated
European University of Lefke (EUL) Dr. Fazıl Küçük Education Faculty academic staff member Prof. Dr. Nergüz Bulut Serin and Ömer Yusuf Yılmaz, a graduate student of EUL Department of Guidance and Psychological Counselling published an article in an internationally important journal. The articles of Serin and Yılmaz titled “The Attitudes of Adolescents towards Social Media and the Levels of Loneliness” were published in the January 2021 issue of “Elementary Education Online” (EEO).
Serin stated that the main purpose of this study, which Serin made with her graduate student, was to examine the relationship between the attitudes towards social media and loneliness levels of high school students studying at high schools affiliated to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the Ministry of National Education, and another purpose of the study was to examine the social media. She stated that it is an investigation of whether there are significant differences in attitudes towards the media and levels of loneliness in terms of various socio-demographic variables.
Serin gave information about the article, and She stated that adolescents’ addiction to social media and determining the positive or negative aspects of social media tools that affect these individuals are important due to many issues, “Today, young people; They turn to social media with the desire to get away from daily stress and troubles, to share the developments in their lives with their friends and to create their own private spaces. The search for identity, which has become increasingly important in adolescence, has become more and more important in the lives of young people with the spread of the internet and both intense and easy access to social media. The development of the internet has brought people many innovations, conveniences and habits. It can be said that the most important of these is social media”.
In her study, Serin suggested that awareness-raising activities on social media literacy should be carried out in schools
Serin said, “Considering the finding that social media attitudes are at a moderate level in the study, it may be recommended to raise awareness in schools on social media literacy in order to reduce internet addiction and negative use of social media use. It is considered important that guidance experts working in school guidance services, especially in schools, should organize seminars and conferences in order to reduce the loneliness and social media attitudes of students. Serin said that “Knowing the students’ attitudes towards social media, taking the necessary precautions according to the positive or negativity of its effects will enable the use of social media in a more conscious way” and this way, adolescents can develop a positive attitude towards social media and work on the loneliness levels of adolescents. She also said that he could contribute to the researches about the educational and academic use of social media networks and guide similar studies on adolescents.
