Violence against women must stop
European University of Lefke (EUL) Psychology Department academic staff member Assist. Prof. Dr. Cemaliye Direktör gave detailed information on the occasion of the Day of Combating Violence Against Women.
“Violence is a reaction of an individual when he is afraid that he is unable to produce solutions, feels superior and cannot actually control himself. Unfortunately, the risk of exposure to violence was grouped and women were in the group with the highest risk. In addition to women, children, the elderly and individuals with special education needs are exposed to violence, ”said the Direktör, emphasizing that when these groups are evaluated, other groups other than women may need support, but women’s needs are social, not biological.
“Throughout history, women have been seen as individuals who should continue their existence under male domination. They were perceived as individuals who are incapable of expressing their own thoughts, in need of care and in need of protection. In some cultures, women were seen as a flower, and again they were described as “powerless” with positive discrimination. The different understanding of men and women often means that men are strong and increase the risk of women being subjected to violence. ”The Direktör stated that although the first thing that comes to mind when violence is mentioned, women are unfortunately more frequently exposed to emotional, verbal and sexual violence, Even though he said no, he said that trying to flirt or talking while on the road is also violence. In the continuation of the director’s statement, she said;
Women are killed because they are women. Their only crime is being a woman. Almost every day we read that one or more women are killed by their ex-husband or lover – a man he knows.
Neither woman nor man, only human
Gender roles are all the unwritten characteristics determined by the society that show how women and men should behave with a very strong influence. These roles are passed on to us before they are born. If a girl is born, pink, if a boy is born, blue colors are hung on the door. So why should we inform everyone about the gender of the child in advance? Does it matter, to be a girl or a boy? Unfortunately it does. Girls play this game, boys play this; this is girl color, this is boy color; boys misbehave, girls become ladies, sit down. These are the features that our environment gives us. We take on these roles and act accordingly. Girls face bans so much that they learn to obey and rebel against everything. Heroes in fairy tales are men. The evil witch is only the man who protects the woman from the women. Princesses need protection. It is beautiful and elegant. A woman who is not beautiful cannot be a princess. The woman should always be beautiful and well-groomed, take care of her home and child, but not be “thinking and own”. Gender equality is an attitude that is tried to be achieved in all societies. Being a woman or a man is only the determination of society. Laws are needed to protect women from violence, but the best solution is to gain gender equality in society. Fairy tale books and animated films began to change. The number of princesses, whose intelligence is emphasized, not their beauty, also increased. Murders of women and violence against women can only be prevented by gender equality. The struggle will be won on the day when we consider the opponent as only human, without making any distinction between men and women. When powerful, self-confident princesses are brought up, women will not be killed because they are women.
