Awareness of children’s rights is important in preventing child abuse
With the cooperation of European University of Lefke (EUL) Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Education Department of Elementary Teaching and Northern Cyprus Turkish Red Crescent Lefke Office Awareness activity on Children’s Rights was held at Yedidalga Primary School on 25 November 2019.
The aim of the event was to raise awareness of children against abuse.
In event which was organized by the students of Pre-School Teaching Department under the framework of their Children’s Right course, the 4th grade students in primary school made paintings on white t-shirts after the video demonstration about children’s rights. With the motto “I am a child, I have rights”, the event aimed to make children aware of their rights and to gain them the awareness to take precautions against all kinds of abuse.
Children grow up, learn and sometimes need more protection because of their age
Giving information on the event the Chairperson of Elementary Education Department Assist. Prof. Dr. Çağda Kıvanç Çağanağa touched upon the importance of Children’s Rights and said that “Although the rights laid down in the Convention on the Rights of the Child are very similar to the rights of adults, the Convention states that adults and governments have additional responsibilities to ensure that children have access to all their rights. Because children grow up, learn and sometimes need more protection because of their age. Awareness of children’s that they have rights has an important role in preventing child abuse. Çağanğa stated that almost all countries in the world have agreed to implement the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and added that this is the first instrument developed to cover all international human rights that concern only children, including civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights as well as humanitarian law.
I have no doubt that EUL teacher candidates will treat children with care and understanding.
Çağanağa went on to say that she has no doubt that the teacher candidates of European University of Lefke (EUL) Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Education will treat children with care and understanding while internalizing the Children’s rights. Çağanağa finally conveyed her sincere thanks to Assist.
