An Award to EUL by Turkey Communal Services Foundation

Under the leadership of Assist Prof. Dr. Tuba Gökmenoğlu- Member of European University of Lefke (EUL) Dr. Fazıl Küçük Education Faculty Psychological Guidance and Counselling Department, the course organized within the framework of “Communal Services Applications” by the senior students the social responsibility Project entitled “My Wonderful School” was awarded “Prof. Dr. Yahya Özsoy Communal Services Award” by Turkey Communal Services Foundation (TOVAK).

At the award ceremony which was realized in Anadolu University, the student of Psychological Guidance and Counselling Department Mustafa Kıvanç held a visual presentation in regards to “My Wonderful School” project of 2015-2016 Academic Years, informing the participants. Following the presentation, the contributing students were presented certificates of success and plaques on behalf of EUL, during the awarding ceremony.

Gökmenoğlu informing about the Project indicated that the aim of the project was to develop the 5 educational institutions located in Lefke to a better quality, to create playgrounds and to also maintain and build safer environment to the existing playgrounds. Besides of school and ministerial officials; the locals, universities and NGOs must also feel responsible in maintaining a better quality to the local educational institutions” stated Gökmenoğlu, and also emphasized that they look forward to raise their students accordingly to this awareness in order to create a better environment for education in these institutions, thus they visit those schools where future projects are to be realized.

Gökmenoğlu briefed on the requirements as such: repairing the exterior and interior of school walls, completing the maintenance of windows and doors and painting them, repairing un-safe ceiling and filling the splits, painting the exterior walls and rusted metal fences, cleaning and maintaining the school library, repairing and painting the metal shelter where students rest and eat, painting the playgrounds in school and repairing them, painting the sitting places within the school zone colorfully, painting pavestones around the flowers and playgrounds and planting flowers and trees.

Gökmenoğlu mentioned that the Project is realized totally with the collective voluntary work discipline which the locals and institutions tended to work together. Considering the Project “My Wonderful School” Gökmenoğlu stated that all the parties including the artisans of Lefke and Gemikonağı, students’ parents, teachers and the Lefke Municipality; in order to build a better and healthier school and educational environment. The projects initially began with wall repairing, stated Gökmenoğlu and then continued with the maintenance in gardens and parks. Gökmenoğlu emphasized that this collaborative work is a modern example of the Anatolian collective workforce being realized under the Project “My Wonderful School”; expanding the work of EUL students beyond the boundaries of the island reaching Turkey, representing EUL and acting as an exemplary to other universities and local institutions.
