The Programme is designed to enable students to become psychological counselors who are trained in general psychology as a behavioural science, competent in conducting research in the area of counseling and education, and competent in providing effective counseling. Attention is given both to normal developmental issues and to problems associated with physical, emotional, and mental disorders; testing in the area of psychology and education; diverse approaches to both individual and group counseling and therapy. The programme will help students in developing a professional identity as a counselor and also as an education specialist so that they can work in a variety of setting.

The medium of instruction of the department is Turkish. The department accepts students according to the TM-3 point and grading system. The department can be the ideal field of study for persons who enjoy social sciences, who have a special interest in psychology and who enjoy assisting others. The undergraduate programme focuses mainly on developmental psychology and treatment models. Students are required to take mandatory courses related to the subject, teaching, general culture and applied courses in the first 4 semesters. In the 3rd and 4th year semesters, students are required to take a number of theory courses focusing especially on the subject as well as more applied courses. Applied courses are held in collaboration and coordination with the Faculty of Education, schools operating under the Ministry of National Education, special and private schools or education centres. All applied courses or training programmes will be held under the supervision of teaching staff.

Graduates of this department may seek employment in primary and secondary schools operating under the roof of the TRNC and Turkish Education Ministries, psychological counseling departments, private psychological and psychotherapy, guidance research centres, military academies, Turkish Armed Forces guidance and psychological counseling centres, nursery schools, pre-schools, day care centres, education centres, family and juvenile courts, police academies, social services institutions, community or youth centres, family guidance and counseling centres, trade unions, private companies, local administrations, health centres, community education centres or human resources departments. Graduates may also serve or work as career consultants.

A number of panel discussions, conferences and seminars are organized frequently as part of the programme and students are encouraged to participate in congresses or symposiums alongside their instructors and teachers.
